Priyankara: Pioneering Organic Fashion with Purpose

In today’s fast-paced world, fashion often takes a toll on the environment. As consumers grow more conscious of sustainability, brands like Priyankara are stepping in to meet the demand for eco-friendly options. Founded by Priyanka and Bhavika Thadani, Priyankara blends style with sustainability, creating organic clothing that is both functional and environmentally friendly. With a mission rooted in health and ethics, the brand is paving the way for a more conscious approach to fashion.

The Roots of Priyankara

Priyankara was born out of a deeply personal journey. Bhavika Thadani’s daughter, Priyanka, developed skin allergies, which prompted them to dig deeper into the effects of synthetic fabrics on the body. They soon realized that the chemicals used in traditional clothing manufacturing could aggravate common skin conditions. This discovery led the duo to organic cotton and herbally dyed fabrics, which are gentler on the skin. The brand was officially launched on International Women’s Day, March 8th, as a symbol of their commitment to sustainability and the well-being of their customers.

Priyanka and Bhavika have also made education a key part of their mission. Through workshops, they give others the chance to experience the benefits of organic fabrics firsthand. Their approach to sustainable fashion is not just about the clothes but about encouraging a lifestyle that values the environment and health.

Overcoming Challenges in Sustainable Sourcing

One of the main challenges the founders faced was sourcing authentic organic fabrics with GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certification. This certification is crucial for ensuring the integrity of organic textiles, but many fabric suppliers shy away from it due to the costs involved. Without the certification, it is difficult to guarantee that the fabrics are truly organic, creating a barrier for consumers who want to make informed choices.

The Thadani duo tackled this challenge by attending workshops and fairs, eventually finding two certified vendors. They visited these suppliers’ plantations and workshops, staying for two days to ensure they were confident in their choice. Through persistence and thorough research, Priyankara found partners who share their commitment to transparency and sustainability, ensuring that every piece of fabric used in their collections is truly organic.

Supporting Shelters for Stray Dogs

In addition to focusing on sustainability, the founders are passionate about animal welfare. A percentage of their profits is donated to shelters that help stray dogs, a cause that is close to their hearts since they have adopted a dog themselves.

This initiative not only demonstrates their commitment to ethical business practices but also underscores their desire to support the community beyond the realm of fashion. By aligning their business with causes they care about, they have extended their brand’s impact to include both sustainable textiles and compassion in action.

Merging Trends with Sustainability

While organic fashion is often associated with muted colors and casual styles, Priyankara aims to challenge this perception. The founders believe that organic clothing should not be limited to weekend wear but should be part of an everyday wardrobe. To achieve this, they design pieces that are both formal and versatile, allowing customers to transition from the workplace to weekend outings seamlessly.

Their approach is to introduce organic fashion gradually into wardrobes, one piece at a time. This helps make sustainable fashion more accessible without overwhelming consumers. By keeping an eye on current trends and adapting them to organic fabrics, Priyankara ensures that eco-conscious clothing can be fashionable, practical, and easy to incorporate into daily life.

 A Future Rooted in Growth

As a brand that is just over a year old, Priyankara is focused on building a solid foundation in the organic fashion industry. Bhavika Thadani admits that while they are still in the early stages, they are dedicated to expanding once they have firmly established their current collections. Their long-term vision includes branching into sustainable beauty products, leveraging Bhavika’s personal experience with DIY skincare solutions.

For now, Priyankara is content with its growth trajectory, confident in its ability to balance eco-friendly fashion with a commitment to ethical practices and community support. With part of their profits going to support stray animals, the  Thadani duo is not only creating a brand but also giving back to the world around them.
